Varsity Football Homecoming Game, Win

Athletics

The Shorecrest Chargers Varsity Football Team held off the visiting Out of Door Academy Thunder by a final score of 8-3 in Friday's SSAC Conference battle in front of a packed Homecoming house on Haskell Field. With the win, Shorecrest improves its record to 4-1 on the season, and secures an automatic playoff berth in the SSAC!

Shorecrest struggled offensively for most of the game, but came alive for it's final drive with less than 2 minutes remaining. Starting a drive on their own 22 yard line, the Chargers converted several key plays in the final minute of the game by quarterback Max Stover and wide receiver Trevor Bernstein. This led to set up a perfectly executed bootleg pass to Cole Persinger for the go-ahead score, putting the Chargers up 6-3. An errant snap for the Extra Point attempt caused PAT holder Jake Freedman '19 to scramble his way into the End Zone for an unexpected 2 point conversion, and an 8-3 lead.

The Chargers defense led by senior defensive ends Ethan Forsyth and Ashton Reynolds had to hold on for the final 38 seconds to seal this homecoming victory and an automatic berth in the SSAC Playoffs. This electricity-filled, come from behind victory was topped off by the entire student body storming the field in a victory celebration.

The seniors on this team are a very special group of young men. Their leadership and character allowed them to taste success - even on a night when they were struggling. Coach Dudley said, "I am so proud of this entire team, but these seniors continue to come through in crucial moments."

The victory bumped Shorecrest’s record to 4-1. The loss dropped Out-of-Door Academy's record to 4-2.

Up Next: The Chargers will have some time to rest before their next contest on October 19 against Evangelical Christian in Ft. Myers.
