SCA News

The Shorecrest Community Association (SCA) welcomed Head of Middle School Jonathan Davis as the guest speaker at its inaugural meeting of the 2015-16 school year. Mr. Davis talked to the group of parents and friends about the challenges and joys of educating and parenting adolescents. The top three takeaways from Mr. Davis’ presentation on parenting and education adolescents are:

Adolescence is a real, natural part of growing up during which there are major changes in brain chemistry and function.
  • One of two points in life of extreme adaptability
  • An opportunity to develop new talents
  • Neural pathways are created and strengthened
On top of wonderful adaptability, adolescents:
  • Have heightened sensory perceptions
  • Feel things more deeply
  • Respond to rewards/risks more than punishments/costs
What’s a parent to do?
  • Create firm guidelines and boundaries
  • Be supportive and guiding
  • Be warm--adolescents need to feel the love!
All four schools - The Experiential, Lower, Middle and Upper Schools - base their curriculum and programming around the best practices at each stage of child development. The Middle and Upper Schools are particularly attuned to what is best for students at each stage of adolescence.
