A Permanent Part of Shorecrest History
A new piece of public art is on display on the Shorecrest campus. The Shorecrest centennial sculpture, "Anamorphic Lighting Bolt" by artist Donald Gialanella was officially unveiled as a part of Centennial Celebration Day on November 11, 2023. The project was gifted by alumni siblings Beth Reynolds '84 and Charles Reynolds '81 who connected the artist to the School and spearheaded support from fellow alumni.
The permanent piece, which is proudly displayed outside of the Athletic Center, celebrates Shorecrest's centennial by asking questions about perspective and symbolizing how each of our four school divisions fit together as one. Viewers of the sculpture are encouraged to admire it from the standpoint of the bronze medallion in the ground to see the full picture.
Donald Gialanella is an artist specializing in the design and fabrication of public art, including the Dali Mustache at the Dali Museum here in St. Petersburg. Originally from Maplewood, New Jersey, he now works out of his studio in St. Petersburg, Florida. Donald apprenticed with artist Louise Bourgeois after earning a BFA in sculpture from The Cooper Union in New York. Known for his larger-than-life sculptures in public and private collections across the United States, his work is installed in over a dozen cities from California to New York.
