Poetic Escape Room
Shorecrest seniors in Ms. Updike's A.P. Literature and Composition course disentangled their way through the first-annual Poetry Garden! This Poetry Garden was a poetry-themed escape room to help students prepare not only for their unit test but also for their second timed essay over an A.P. poetry prompt. In addition to the room's decorative vines, illuminated birch trees, earth-tone balloons, and hanging, embellished poems, the escape room featured eight locks that grouped students had to break within their given time. After solving a crossword puzzle of poetic devices, a word search of the unit's focal poets, and a matching game of device examples, students used such tools as an A1Z26 cipher, a chronological timeline, a magnetic poetry set, an overlapping color code to find keys hidden around the room as well as to unlock each lock and, more importantly, to prove their knowledge of this unit's content, such as correctly ordering ictuses and breves to indicate metrical rhythms.
Three of the seven groups among three separate classes successfully escaped the room and detangled themselves from the Garden!
