Sidewalk Chalk Meaningful Messages

Upper School News Upper School News

Shorecrest members of the Class of 2023 in Ms. Updike’s A.P. Literature and Composition classes stormed the sidewalks to share their favorite or most memorable quotes from any novel they had read all year. In preparation for the A.P. Literature and Composition exam in early May, seniors reviewed their previous free response question essays (FRQs) as well as their comprehensive note cards for such novels as "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston, "1984" by George Orwell, "The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros, and "Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison.

Their quotes largely focused on the power of words, the concerns about censorship, and their optimism regarding education as a central means toward creating a more hopeful world. Seniors have expressed throughout the year how Shorecrest provides a space where empathy, diversity, and autonomy are celebrated. Their quotes and their drawings attest to that celebration.
