On a Saturday afternoon two weeks before winter break, members of the Outdoor Club went on a camping retreat near Fort De Soto. With Mr. Steele and Mrs. Walker accompanying, nine students from the Upper School left all the comforts of home (yes, including WIFI) for a night of camping out under the stars.
We departed on canoes from the main boat launching area just before Fort De Soto Park, before making an hour long paddle with two to three people and about fifty pounds of gear to a canoe -- out to a fairly remote camping beach. After setting up camp, everyone decided to venture around the island, but, unbeknownst to everyone, there was a sinister colony of sand-spurs lurking in a field. Needless to say, that was interesting. But aside from that, the entire trip was a blast. We cooked food over a fire, looked up at the stars, enjoyed the beautiful sunset, watched the extremely dense fog roll in, wiped off the dew from everything that was outside for more than five minutes, then fell asleep to the sound of the waves and wind blowing by the tents.
The trip in its entirety was fantastic! It is definitely a worthwhile way to spend a weekend. If you are interested in a future excursion, see either Mr. Steele or Mrs. Walker to find out trip dates, times, fees and activities.
Also, if you're interested in rock climbing with the Outdoor Club, talk to either Mr. Steele or senior Annie G to get the necessary paperwork. You can come once, or frequently - it's up to you! It is a great way to hang out with your friends.
