GSI Speaker on Latin America
January 29, 2015
This week, GSI welcomed Dr. Rachel May, Director of the Institute for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean at USF. She also leads a study abroad program in Buenos Aires every summer.
With our students, Dr. May led a lecture regarding Latin American politics and human rights with a focus on Guatemala and Argentina. She got everyone thinking as they tried to define "human rights" and look at human rights issues in Latin America from the Cold War era through today.
She concluded her talk with a consideration of Pope Francis' career - initially as head of the Jesuits in Argentina, subsequently as Archbishop of Argentina and how these experiences may help explain his activism in the name of human rights and his brokering of the agreement between Cuba and the United States to resume normal diplomatic relations.
