Shorecrest Celebrates the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Monday, January 16, more than 70 members of the Shorecrest community joined the greater St. Petersburg community to march in the MLK Dream Big Parade in downtown St. Pete. 2017 marked the school’s fifth consecutive year participating in the celebration.
This year’s group, Shorecrest’s largest ever, included representatives from all four schools, Experiential through Upper School, as well as faculty, staff, alumni, parents, board members and friends. The Chargers strolled the parade route and handed out more than 15,000 pieces of candy to the 40,000+ spectators lining the streets.
Following the morning’s festivities, the Chargers switched gears from celebration to service as a group completed a service project with CASA (Community Action Stops Abuse), a local non-profit here working with families overcoming domestic violence. Together, the group of nine students and four faculty members created “welcome” care packages for families entering the shelter.
According to Diego Duran-Medina, Director of Service Learning at Shorecrest, “By treating it as a day "on" for service, Shorecrest lives the value of compassion.”
