Reading Pal Visits Oldie Goldie Books Sale

Upper School News

Sarah Miller ‘19 has been a volunteer Reading Pal at the Northside club of the Boys and Girls Club Suncoast since February. Twice each week she goes to the Club to read, and tries to read with the same girl every time. They also work on skills like spelling and vocabulary.

“I wanted to give back to the community somehow, and reading is important to me. I had time after school to give back because I wasn’t playing a sport.” she explained.

Sarah noticed the options of books to read at the Club were slim, so she went to Shorecrest Lower School’s Oldie Goldie book sale and got books, both purchased and donated, which she donated to the Club. “They were really happy to receive them.”

The Oldie Goldie book sale happens at Shorecrest annually, and the Boys and Girls Club could always use more volunteers. “One thing I want to emphasize,” Sarah said, “is that I would love for this to continue after I graduate, so next year I’m trying to find underclassmen to carry it on.”

If other Shorecrest students want to get involved with volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club after school or over the summer, they can contact Sarah and she will explain the process necessary to become a volunteer there.
