A Student's Perspective on Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease

Upper School News

Ellie Lewis ‘22 just completed a semester-long independent study course entitled “A Student's Perspective on Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease.” To take the class, Ellie had to create a course proposal and submit it to Shorecrest’s curriculum council last year. It was approved with Lisa Peck, Director of Shorecrest Upper School’s Peck Center for Medical Sciences, as her sponsor.

Throughout the 2021 fall semester, Ellie met with Mrs. Peck every other week to discuss her research. She developed an informative website to share her findings.

“The website Ellie created has so many resources for people who want to learn more about the nervous system and Alzheimer's Disease,” Mrs. Peck shared. “The images she chose and the development of the website are excellent.”

Looking back on her investigation, Ellie said, “the most interesting thing I discovered - and the most shocking - was the connection between menopause and Alzheimer’s. I would have never thought of these two things having a connection. It was also shocking to learn how recent the discovery was, as we have known for years that women are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and the reason as to why was just recently searched for and found.“
