Capitalism and the Cold War

Upper School News

For the past couple of weeks, students in Kayla Brazee's Honors U.S. History classes have been examining the Cold War and the Atomic Age. After learning about the development of the atomic bomb and its impact on American popular culture in the 1950s, students were asked to create models of their own detailed nuclear fallout shelters. In creating their shelters, students had to consider building materials, capacity, protective equipment, supplies and other elements that would make living in their spaces more enjoyable. Some made their fallout shelters as 2D floor plans while others chose to make 3D models or create their's through games such as Minecraft or The Sims. After finalizing their projects, students were asked to consider how the fallout shelter craze of this time period was connected to American capitalism.
