SAGA Family Fun Day: Saturday, March 26

Upper School News

All members of the Shorecrest community are invited to join our International Connections affinity group on Saturday, March 26, 10am - 2pm for an outdoor Family Fun Day on campus to celebrate, recognize, support and embrace the cultural and ethnic diversity in our Shorecrest community. The March 26th event is our fourth SAGA (Shorecrest Affinity Group Alliance) day of the school year. It will be held in the Charger Commons Greenspace and feature food and games for the whole family. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. If you are interested in sharing your family's culture while at the event, please bring a nut-free dish to share!

The mission of the International Connections group is to (while supported by the Director of Diversity & Inclusion):
  • act as a social and support network to new and existing international families at Shorecrest
  • liaise with faculty and staff to offer first-hand knowledge of international customs and traditions in the classroom, increasing global perspective
  • partner with the Parent Ambassador program through the Admissions office to facilitate the entry of new incoming international families into Shorecrest
  • serve as a conduit for students to become better ‘global learners’ through participation in suitable exchange programs, conferences, organizations and experiences
Based on a 2019 family survey, over 65 different countries are represented by Shorecrest families, faculty and staff – with many more having joined over the past school years. (Families have reported their nationality as being from Albania, Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Germany, Granada, Haiti, Honduras, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Laos, Lebanon, Mexico, Netherlands, North Korea, Pakistan, Panama, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Senegal, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Venezuela, Vietnam, and many others.)

This year the International Fair will return to campus! The event features booths decorated and run by members of the community that highlight and educat our students on the richness of culture and the appreciation of the gifts we all bring to the Shorecrest Campus every day. Shorecrest is a community that not only acknowledges the ethnic diversity of its community, but also recognizes the contributions of various cultures throughout the school year. Our curriculum is intentionally inclusive of multiple perspectives, including those of international authors, scientists, mathematicians, and other leaders. Teachers highlight the accomplishments of great figures from all over the globe; and our students are exposed to ways they too can grow up to help build a country where everyone is appreciated for their creativity and passions.
