Meeting of the Minds in AP U.S. History

Upper School News Upper School News

One of the signature lessons of Shorecrest's AP U.S. History class is Meeting of the Minds. For this activity, students in the class are assigned roles of historical figures relevant to a particular era and are expected to debate their characters' views on specific topics. Additionally, they write an introductory paper on their characters.

The purpose of this assignment is for students to become more familiar with the ideas of the various leaders during their respective time periods. Previous "Meeting of the Minds" have centered around the American Revolution, Jacksonian Democracy, the Gilded Age and the New Deal. For the last Meeting of the Minds students stepped into the shoes of characters such as John F. Kennedy, Gloria Steinem, Malcolm X, General William Westmoreland, Richard Nixon and Abbie Hoffman to better understand America in the 1960s.
