Cub Scout Pinewood Derby

Lower School News

Shorecrest Cub Scout Pack 303 hosted its annual Pinewood Derby Races on Sunday, January 24 in the Shorecrest Athletic Center. For the second year in a row, the Pack competed against St. Raphael’s Cub Scout Pack 219.

The Pinewood Derby is a longstanding tradition for Cub Scouts. The boys, with the help of parents, design and build their own cars from wood, usually from kits containing a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axles. The racing event is exciting, but designing and building a car is just as big a part of the process and can take several weeks.

The week before this year’s race, many of the boys in Pack 303 visited the workshop of Shorecrest parent Dr. Britt Cobb of Cobb Design. The boys learned to work safely on various machine tools (with adult supervision) to transform their cars and wheels into racing machines.

On the day of the race, more than 25 boys and their families and friends lined up to observe and cheer. Each boy competed to try to win his respective Pack race for speed, as well as the overall speed race for the Champion between the two Packs. Other categories – judged by the boys themselves – included Most Scout Spirit, Most Patriotic, Best Design. Also, an annual rotating Sportsmanship award is given out during the races. The excitement amongst the boys was palpable as each of course hoped to be the victor.
