Selecting Kindergarten Garden Plants

Lower School News

Kindergarten has been very busy preparing to start garden beds! First the students made a graph of everyone's two favorite garden vegentable choices. Mrs. Vigue's class choose peppers and broccoli plants to grow in the bed along with carrot seeds to grow in the classroom.

Next, classes enjoyed visiting Dolins Garden Center. The children had the opportunity to choose a vegetable starter plant. Everything was later planted in the Lower School garden.

Mrs. Vigue's class also constructed a terrarium and filled it with succulents. The children learned these types of plants require little water to live.

Kindergarteners look forward to watching all of the plants grow!

Some other gardening bonuses:
  • Children learn responsibility by caring for plants
  • Students learn to work cooperatively
  • Students learn cause and affect from planting and plant life cycles
  • Children connect with nature and begin to understand botany and ecology
  • Gardeners tend to have more nutritious eating habits
