Shorecrest Students Shadow Surgeon

Upper School News

Upper School Science Teacher Lisa Peck states, "The only good thing that came out of my needing surgery two years ago was the connection I made with my surgeon, Dr. Richard Fansler."

This week, Ms. Peck's Intro to Medical Science students began their field experiences at Largo Medical Center; shadowing her surgeon for a day. Each Wednesday, three of Ms. Peck's students will shadow Dr. Fansler as he does his rounds and surgeries. Dr. Fansler is a general surgeon who, as a former faculty member of the Tulane University Department of Surgery, truly enjoys teaching students who are interested in medicine. What an amazing opportunity for high school students to scrub up and be present during surgeries!

Pictured here, seniors Courtney M, Matt L and Katherine P, were the first students to shadow Dr. Fansler. He had surgeries scheduled for the entire day, so the Upper School students were with him in the OR all day long. Here’s what they had to say about the experience:

“Shadowing Dr. Fansler at Largo Medical Center was the most incredible opportunity and an unforgettable experience, especially for a senior in high school. Watching surgery up close in the OR was a dream come true. Exploring the hospital, seeing patients, and experiencing the everyday routine of a surgeon was also super educational and fun! I definitely want to pursue a medical career as a surgeon after shadowing Dr. Fansler and his surgical team today.” - Matt L.

“Shadowing Dr. Fansler was truly an amazing experience that I will never forget. From going on rounds, to lunch with the residents, I truly got a feel for what it is like to be a general surgeon. Aside from seeing a day in the life, we got to see two surgeries. During the first surgery, Dr. Fansler partnered with an orthopedic surgeon and cut into the anterior abdominopelvic cavity and worked to expose the patient's vertebrae. The second surgery was a femoral popliteal bypass surgery. We got to see up close what Dr. Fansler was doing as he cut the tissue, cleaned out plaque, and attached the graft. I was truly amazed. This day was unforgettable, and I can't wait to get back into the OR. Thank you so much to Ms. Peck for arranging this!” - Courtney M.

Thank you to Dr. Fansler for welcoming Shorecrest students and providing them with tremendous field experiences. These teaching moments can be pivotal experiences for a decision-making young person!
