Track and Field's Tremendous post-season Competitions

The Shorecrest Chargers track and field team headed to the District meet at St. Stephens in April. The Chargers were able to advance in the following events:

Girls long jump (3rd): Renice Dacres ‘19

Girls 800m: (2nd) sixth grader Kaja D

Girls 1600m: (1st) Reagan Quilty ‘19, (2nd) Isabelle Saunders ‘20

Girls 4x400m: (4th) Reagan Quilty, Isabelle Saunders, Kaja D, Reilly Kropf ‘20

Boys Long jump: (2nd) Jared Price ‘18

Boys Triple Jump: (4th) Thomas McMullen ‘19

Boys Shot-put: (4th) Orrin Fredericks ‘18

Boys Pole vault (1st) Trevor Bernstein ‘19

Boys 110 meter hurdles (4th) Omarhiyon Malcolm ‘20

Boys 100m and 200m (2nd in both) Samuel Benjamin ‘18

The Regional meet followed on April 25th at Cypress Creek Middle High School in Wesley Chapel. Our athletes once again competed well and represented Shorecrest with pride.  Omarhiyon Malcolm did not advance out of the Regional meet but was able to break the school record for the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.60 seconds. Samuel Benjamin also had a great day, sprinting the 100 meters in under 11 seconds for the first time (10.96) and breaking his own school record (22.50) in the 200 meter sprint, clocking a time of 22.28. The following athletes and relays were able the advice to the State meet:

The State Meet was held at University of North Florida in Jacksonville on May 4-5th. All athletes and classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A) merged on site to compete against the best in their division. On the first day, all of our field event qualifiers competed. Renice Dacres placed 10th overall in the state for girls long jump. This was especially good as Renice had been battling a knee injury all season. Jared Price placed 13th in the boys’ long jump competition with some of his best jumps of the year. On the pole vault, Trevor Bernstein finished 9th overall in the state. He was able to vault the best he had all season and broke the school record by clearing 3.9meters. On the track, the boys 4x100 meter relay team was on pace to advance to the finals and break the school record until a poor handoff in the final exchange erased those chances. They were upset but demonstrated great team spirit in helping and cheering on their teammates in other events. Samuel Benjamin ‘18 advanced to the finals to be run the following day in both the 100 (3rd) and 200 meter (6th) dash. The last event of the day was the boys 4x400 meter relay. Shorecrest started out strong but ended up 6th in their preliminary heat and were unable to advance. Overall the first day was a success.  

Samuel Benjamin ‘18 was the last athlete for Shorecrest to compete, making the final in both the 100 and 200 meter dash. After starting preparations for sprinting early in the morning, Sam was ready to go. The 100 meter dash was first and Sam didn’t disappoint, finishing 3rd overall in the state and running a time of 10.98 seconds. Even though this is a great accomplishment for any athlete, Sam was a little upset as he felt that he could have executed better. He refocused and prepared for his final race of his high school career, the 200 meters. In the 200 meter, Sam came out with everything he had and ran the best 200 of his life! He was able to place 2nd overall with a time of 21.97 after qualifying in 7th place. This was his first time running under 22 seconds and the third time he improved on his school record for the year.

The State meet was a great experience for the Chargers, parents, and coaches - as these memories will last a lifetime.
