Students Join International Movement to Combat Climate Change

According to the Twitter account of Greta Thunberg (the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist responsible for organizing the Fridays for Future movement) on September 20, 2019, 4 million people in 163 countries went on climate strike. 4 million people left work and school to protest the lack of recognition of climate change by global leaders. This is the biggest protest in our century involving more countries than any other.
Shorecrest Upper School students Brenna Dukes ‘21 and Erin Mullins ‘20 attended St. Petersburg’s protest and made noise on the steps of City Hall. Brenna is a civil rights activist heavily involved in movements such as Black Lives Matter, Me Too, and March for our Lives. Erin is the president of the Outdoor Club, and more specifically involved in outdoor education and Florida’s environment and ecosystems. Both Brenna and Erin participated in the global protest to raise awareness about climate change and to catch the attention of global leaders to make change.
Shorecrest inspires a new generation of leaders to make change in our world and provides the support and opportunity for students to pursue their passions.
