Get a behind-the-scenes peek at what happens during After School Clubs for ES and LS students in these notes from the club leaders:

Spanish Fútbol: Beyond practicing skills and passes, club members learned about Madrid, remarkable monuments there, and the three main teams of the city: Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid and Rayo Vallecano. The kids colored the Real Madrid logo and the flag of Spain. They watched a video of the new Real Madrid stadium, Santiago Bernabeu. Next they learned about Barcelona, some landmarks there, and Spanish architect and artist Antoni Gaudí. They learned about the two teams of the city, mainly FC Barcelona. This allowed them to discuss the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona. They learned about Bilbao and its team in La Liga EA Sports, Athletic de Bilbao. They took a virtual tour of the Guggenheim Museum and learned some words in Basque. They designed and colored their own soccer jersey. They watched a video of the best goals in the Spanish League.

Tarde de Arte: The children learned about surrealism through the art of Spanish painter Joan Miró. They expressed their imaginations with basic colors and shapes that they learned how to say in Spanish. Then they created surrealistic paintings inspired by Miró. Next they learned about Diego Rivera, a famous Mexican painter and muralist. The children made “Alcatraces” (Mexican Flowers) inspired by the alcatraces made by Diego Rivera. They learned that Diego Rivera expressed Mexican history in his paintings and murals.

Procreate: Procreate is an iPad app that provides a graphics editor for digital painting. The digital artists in the club learned about the symmetry guide. They loved experimenting with making faces, designs, and animals utlizing horizontal, vertical, and diagonal symmetry guidelines. The artists took electronic pencil to digital paper and learned how to use an image to fill part of a design, like a pattern. The artists were in complete amazement by the 'magic' and spent nearly thirty minutes playing with the feature!

Zumba Kids (ES): Today we worked on introducing ourselves to each other and learning some basic stretches that we will be using throughout our time together. We talked about how dance can improve our brain function, calm our minds, and improve our flexibility. We worked on our hand-eye coordination by dancing with hula hoops. We read the book "Giraffes Can't Dance" to talk about self-confidence and self expression.
