Buddies Build Rube Goldberg Machines
As part of a Force and Motion unit of inquiry, third graders are studying simple machines. The students have tinkered with levers, pulleys, catapults, screws and wedges. Then they met with the Upper School STEAM class for a design challenge and created Rube Goldberg machines. A Rube Goldberg machine uses a set of simple tasks and reactions that trigger one event after another until the final event is triggered. The goal for these cross-divisional students was to get a ping pong ball into a cup using the supplies and constraints provided as well as collaboration, problem-solving, and hands-on experimentation. The first day they planned in small groups, and the second day they created their machines. See what they built!
