Empowering Student Leaders to Inspire Their Peers

Upper School News

On Monday, August 19, before the school year officially began, Shorecrest Upper School student leaders from Student Council, Honor Council, and Student Ambassadors gathered for Shorecrest's third Student Leadership Institute. The afternoon focused on developing leadership skills that emphasize trust and a positive school culture. Through discussions and activities, student leaders committed to living out the school’s Core Values of Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Knowledge and Compassion. The leaders recognized the importance of making their peers feel seen, heard, and valued; understanding that lasting connections are formed through kindness and respect.

The Student Leadership Institute also emphasized the power of perception and personal responsibility in leadership. In her opening remarks, Nancy Spencer emphasized that “enhancing the student experience” would be the focus in Upper School for the 2024-2025 school year. While there are many factors beyond the School's control, she encouraged student leaders to set the tone by creating a positive culture, embodying the Core Values and challenging negativity when it arises. Spencer reminded the leaders that their influence, particularly in pushing back against unkind or disrespectful behavior, can have a more profound impact on the community.

Shorecrest Parent, Board Member and Senior Faculty Member/Executive Coach at Eckerd College’s Leadership Development Program, Rebecca Armacost, led activities focused on building trust within one’s leadership identity. Ms. Armacost delved into the concept of reputation and how it is shaped by one’s actions, values and behavior. She guided the student leaders through exercises on how to build trust, emphasizing the importance of creating a sense of safety for themselves and others. Armacost also introduced the idea of developing a "Leadership Brand," encouraging the students to reflect on how they present themselves and the lasting impact their leadership can have on the community. By understanding these elements, the leaders gained valuable tools to foster trust and cultivate a positive school environment.

Several of Shorecrest Upper School’s student leaders and Alumni also participated in the HOBY Youth Leadership program in June. Since 1988, Shorecrest has sent 2-4 rising juniors annually to the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Seminar (HOBY). There students meet with other rising juniors from across Florida to discover their inner leader through thought-provoking discussions, support from staff and other ambassadors, and life-changing speakers from across the country. This program further reinforces the values and leadership skills fostered at Shorecrest. The 2024-2025 junior Student Council Representatives were accompanied by Tommy Murphy ‘25, who returned to HOBY as a junior staff member.

The Student Council Representatives and Student Ambassadors put some of what they learned into action at Shorecrest’s Ninth Grade Orientation.

The ripple effect of these student leaders will shape the tone for the school year!
