Tasty Artwork
Students in Mr. McDonough's 3-D Design class received an advanced assignment last semester. "I asked them to think about applying a food technique or process to materials in the 3D studio," he shared.
In a unique combination of artistry and culinary inspiration, Nicholas Canizares '26 and Libby Cenedella '24 decided they wanted to try softening clay into a paste and piping it like sugar icing. And the sweet surprise? "It worked so well that they made cakes using traditional clay techniques and then piped the 'icing' on," said Mr. McDonough
Nicholas is a hobby baker, and Libby's mother, Julie Meyer, is a trained pastry chef in addition to keeping things running smoothly in the Raymund Center. To add to their learning experience, Julie brought a cake decorating/piping kit to the class and showed the students how to perfect their icing techniques.
Students in this visual arts class develop a portfolio of work that reflects their unique artistic voice. Technical skills are reinforced, and students are encouraged to focus on either functional pottery or sculpture.
