It's a new beginning at the Out-of-Door Academy for a new program with new coaches teaching a young team to play together. The next thing to do is to start winning.
Shorecrest freshman Austin G threw for 148 yards and two touchdowns to lead Shorecrest Prep to an 18-6 win over the Thunder in the season opener at Thunder Stadium.
After a scoreless first quarter, it was the Chargers who got on the board first.
After a short punt by the Thunder, the Chargers started at the Thunder 48 yard line. Six plays later it was Gipe scoring on a 1-yard run. He set the touchdown up with a 20-yard pass to Chad S and a 22-yard pass to Colin H to set the ball up at the 1-yard line.
The Chargers made it 12-0 on their next possession. This time Austin threw a 32-yard pass to Patrick F to take a 12-0 lead into halftime.
The Chargers rounded out the scoring in the third quarter when Austin hit Cooper W for a 37-yard TD pass that made the score 18-0.
Cooper finished the game with six receptions for 67 yards.
The Thunder cut the lead to 18-6 on their next possession. It was their best drive of the game, going 11 plays for 68 yards with Trenton Radigan scoring on a 13-yard pass from Gus Mahler. Radigan had six receptions for 50 yards in the game.
The Thunder had 138 yards in total offense.
"This will be a big learning experience for all of us," said coach Ken Sommers. "We are going to build this program and make it last."
