Class A district golf: Titles pile up for Shorecrest's Porter

In the Press

Shorecrest's Greyson P continued to add championships to what is turning out to be a successful senior year.

The Florida State commit shot even-par 72 Monday at Feather Sound in the Class A-14 district tournament. He then defeated Canterbury's Dalton S on the first playoff hole to win the individual title.

For Greyson, it is his fourth 18-hole individual championship this season. He also won the Warrior Invitational, the Mustang Invitational and the CCC Invitational. In 18-hole tournaments, Porter is a combined 13 under.

"My short game was there today, thankfully," said Greyson, who is a member at Feather Sound. "I was just grinding it out all day. It was up and down. But I can't be mad with a 72. Even par is always good out here."

Greyson, who had four birdies and four bogeys, played with Shettle. The twosome played the par-5 first hole in the playoff. Greyson's third shot finished 4 feet from the hole while Shettle's skidded 15 feet past. Greyson made his putt for birdie, while Shettle missed.

Shettle advanced to Monday's regional at East Lake Woodlands as the top individual on a team that did not advance. He is Canterbury's only boy golfer.

Calvary Christian won the team championship with 319. Cal Stephens led the Warriors with 75 and Charlie Lathrop added 78. Clearwater Central Catholic (327) and Shorecrest (339) rounded out the top three teams.

On the girls side, nobody played better than Indian Rocks Christian's Bianca Sol Cruz. She shot 2-under 70, the sophomore's first sub-par high school round this season.

There were only two schools that had enough players to qualify for a team score. Northside Christian won with 405. Indian Rocks Christian was second with a 527.
The top three individuals not on qualifying teams were CCC's Michelle Dudenhoefer (94), Shorecrest's Adrianna L (96) and St. Petersburg Catholic's Lauren Fox (110). The girls also play Monday at East Lake Woodlands.
