Shorecrest School

Girls soccer: Community School of Naples 2, Shorecrest 1

In the Press

Trailing 1-0 with 13 minutes left in regulation, Shorecrest's Christina S, an eighth grader, scored the tying goal against Community School of Naples.

That gave the Chargers some much-needed momentum in Friday's Class A region final.

Six minutes later, the momentum was lost when Shorecrest's lone senior starter, Sophie W, went down with a knee injury. Without Sophie in midfield, the Chargers had a lot of traffic move through on attacks defensively.

In the final two minutes, Community School of Naples' Tatiana Zuloaga scored the winner on a penalty kick in a 2-1 victory.

"Sophie going down really hurt," Chargers coach Neal Wolfrath said. "She's kind of the engine that runs everything. She gets us going on both sides of the ball."

It was a tough loss for the Chargers, who have had their season end with down-to-the wire playoff games in each of the past three seasons. But there is consolation for Shorecrest, which had five eighth-graders in the starting lineup and only two seniors on the roster.

"I'm very proud of them," Wolfrath said. "We built some tradition with the program and some expectations. They did everything to meet those expectations this season."
