BHSN: Athlete of the Week Olivia R

In the Press

No matter the obstacle, Shorecrest Prep senior Olivia R charges ahead. She recently won the Mitchell Invitational 5K race. Her strategy for winning and her attitude have helped her succeed on the cross country course and win her bout with Cancer.

"When I first learned I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I was very surprised and obviously I was pretty upset. But my first instinct was to fight. I kept running throughout my treatment, which was a big challenge. It made me tougher and it definitely gave me a different perspective.”

Olivia has been cancer-free for nearly two years now. Chargers’ varsity cross country coach Royston Dillon said her perseverance shows in how much she has already progressed this season.

“The last two meets she did exceptionally well. In her training, I can see the energy, the strength, the commitment and the dedication that enables Olivia to take her performance to the next level.”

Olivia has won three meets in a row but couldn't believe it when she won 2016 homecoming queen.
“I was really shocked. But I was so excited because it was such an honor for the whole high school to have elected me to represent them. It was such a huge compliment.”

Olivia has maintained a 3.9 GPA and enjoys being a leader on her team. After placing ninth at state finals in 2015, Olivia has her eye set on a title.
