Join Rock Climbing

Upper School News

Since the second week of school, students have been attending exciting rock climbing trips with Mr. Steele. They go to an indoor rock climbing gym in North Tampa called Vertical Ventures, a place which is designed to challenge the most experienced climbers while also suiting the needs of the lesser experienced.

Shorecrest climbers participate in a type of rock climbing called bouldering. This is where people navigate rock climbing tracks (climbers call them problems) that go no higher than eight feet off the well-padded ground. The problems increase in difficulty, from the easiest in orange and pink, to the hardest in black and purple.

The bus leaves school at 3:30 every Thursday and returns to school at 6:30, allowing for approximately an hour and a half for rock climbing, given the drive there and back.

The cost is $14 each time you go: five dollars for shoe rental and nine dollars for admission. And contrary to popular belief, rock climbing is open to all Upper School students, not just the members of the Outdoor Club. And even better, no experience is required! You will pick up skills gradually not only from your friends who may have done it before, but also from the skilled climbers who go there regularly.

Rock climbing is an excellent way to not only built strength in the upper body, but to have a fantastic time with your friends.
