Egg Drop Project in STEAM Club

Upper School News

The STEAM Girls Club, a collaborative effort between Shorecrest Preparatory School and Academy Prep in St. Petersburg, FL, gathered together for hands-on, design thinking projects in Shorecrest's Carleen Vinal Haskell Library.

The first time the girls met, they started with an icebreaker activity to get to know each other. After a quick snack, they each received a bag of identitcal "building" materials - plastic spoons, popsicle sticks, rubber bands, etc - to build a sling shot. Each student had to make a slingshot using at least six of the materials that could hit a paper target from two-feet in the alloted amount of time.

The second STEAM meeting included an Egg Drop activity. The goal of this project was for Middle School girls from the two schools to work in pairs to design a carrier that will prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from a certain height. Students were able to choose from an assortment of provided supplies to engineer a carrier, including cardboard boxes, rubber bands, popsicle sticks, paper bags, masking tape, plastic cups and more. Most of the eggs survived the drop, and some were eaten after the project was complete!

Some physics concepts and wrap-up lessons were led by Shorecrest's Upper School Girls STEAM Club. Special thanks also goes to Dr. Baralt (Shorecrest Director of Educational Technology), Courtney Walker (Shorecrest Media Specialist) and Mrs. Peck (Shorecrest Upper School science teacher) for joining in on the lesson.
