GSI Attends Tampa Bay Committee on Foreign Relations dinner

Upper School News

On January 13, three sophomores in Shorecrest Preparatory School’s Global Scholars Initiative attended the monthly dinner and lecture held by the Tampa Bay Committee on Foreign Relations (TBCFR). The speaker for the night was Gregory A. Maniatis, Senior European Fellow at the Migration Policy Institute. GSI Students in attendance were Will M, Ashley B and Kyle M. GSI Board member and Social Studies teacher Mr. Asad was their faculty chaperone.

Mr. Maniatis came to speak at a very opportune occasion, considering the current migrant and refugee crisis facing Europe, as hundreds of thousands of refugees enter the continent. Mr. Maniatis’ credentials are very well established, as he consults for the European Commission, the European Parliament, and other international organizations.

Mr Maniatis spent about 20 minutes discussing the current crisis and how it could have very far-reaching effects on the socio-political structure of the European Union. He then spent about 30 minutes answering questions from the audience. His appeal for Western nations to do something more substantial about the crisis was strong at all times.

Student Kyle M was among those who asked a question, ensuring Shorecrest’s direct participation in the discussion.

On the trip back to St. Pete, the students spoke very highly of their experience.

Attendance at TBCFR dinners enriches the GSI students’ understanding of current global situations, in keeping with the GSI’s mission. To learn more about the Global Scholars Initiative, visit the GSI page of shorecrest.org.
