Orthopedic Surgeon Visits Pre-Med Club

Upper School News

Last Thursday, the Pre-Med Club had its first speaker, Dr. George H. Canizares, M.D. A General Orthopedic Surgeon with a specialty in Sports Medicine, Dr. Canizares received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of South Florida in Tampa. He completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Michigan and his fellowship in Sports Medicine at South Florida Orthopedic Institute in Coral Gables, Florida. He served as the team doctor for the Miami Heat and Miami Sol and is a part of the sports medicine program at All Florida Orthopaedic Associates.

On his visit to Shorecrest, Dr. Canizares brought prosthetics, including rods, plates and bones, for members of the club to hold and pass around. While he spoke about medical school and his profession, Dr. Canizares answered questions from the students and Ms. Peck, including what it is like to work with professional athletes, how he corrects serious bone injuries of growing children, and the most common sports injuries. Everyone who attended listened attentively and appreciated the opportunity to ask Dr. Canizares questions.

Pre-Med Club member, junior Charity C said about the visit, “It was awesome to be able to physically touch and play with the models he brought of bones and rods or plates that would be surgically installed, and it helped me understand better how orthopedic surgeons actually operate.”

Members of the Pre-Med Club thank Dr. Canizares for coming in to speak with them and look forward to hosting more speakers throughout the year!
