Dr. Samuelson visits Center for Medical Sciences

Upper School News

Last Thursday, the Pre-Med Club and Intro to Medical Sciences and Anatomy students got to listen to a presentation by Shorecrest parent Dr. David Samuelson. Dr. Samuelson is a diagnostic radiologist affiliated with multiple hospitals, including Northside Hospital. He graduated from Duke University’s School of Medicine and completed his residency at Emory University Hospital.

Dr. Samuelson talked with the students about different imaging techniques, including x-rays, CT scans, MRI scans and ultrasounds. They saw photographs exemplifying the differences between them, and they learned x-rays and CT scans emit radiation, while ultrasounds use sound waves to create images, and MRI machines use a magnetic force.

After Dr. Samuelson’s visit, Pre-Med Club member and Anatomy student Charity C. said, “The radiographic images of tumors were very interesting to see, and it was cool to learn which colors signify materials like water and fat for different types of imaging. His presentation definitely reinforced my interest in radiology.”

The students appreciate Dr. Samuelson taking time out of his day to speak to them.
