Dr. Steven Freeman visits Center for Medical Sciences
Last Friday, Dr. Steven Freeman came to Shorecrest to speak to Intro to Medical Science and Anatomy students and Pre-Med club members. A professor for the National University of Health Sciences, Dr. Freeman discussed evidence-based medicine and complementary and alternative medicine.
Evidence-based medicine is based on three components: the physician’s own clinical judgment that comes with experience, relevant scientific evidence that shows a specific ailment should be treated a certain way and will take a certain amount of time to heal, and the patient’s values and preferences, which may dictate how the physician treats the patient. For example, when getting a valve replacement, some people may not want a porcine one because of religious beliefs.
Dr. Freeman also spoke of complementary and alternative medicine, which is essentially treatment of ailments outside the standard medical norm. In complementary medicine, treatment is used with medicine, but in alternative medicine, treatment is used in place of standard medicine. Practices such as yoga and acupuncture fall into this category of complementary and alternative medicine.
We appreciate Dr. Freeman taking the time to come speak to the students about something they might not have known much about.
