Upper School News Arts

Shorecrest senior Sara Rose ‘23 has been awarded a National Gold Scholastic Art Award for her piece “Grow Up.”

More than 100,000 students submitted more than 260,000 works of art and writing to the 2023 Scholastic Awards. Sara’s work was selected by some of the foremost leaders in the visual and literary arts for excellence in originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Less than 2,000 works received a National Medal, which places her within the top 1% of all submissions.

According to Shorecrest Visual Arts Chair and Teacher, Charla Gaglio, “Sara is a tremendous talent and a hard worker who gives so much to her art. I am extremely proud of her and all that she has accomplished while at Shorecrest, including this national recognition from Scholastic. She is also one of the kindest, most upbeat young people with whom I have worked. It has truly been a joy and an honor to have her as a student.”

Like Shorecrest, the National Art & Writing Awards were founded in 1923. For 100 years, the Awards have celebrated teen artists and writers from across the country. Sara joins the ranks of notable alumni, including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, and Andy Warhol - all of whom won Scholastic Awards when they were teens.

Sara’s work will be published in the National Art & Writing Awards Online Galleries at artandwriting.org and will be listed in the organization’s annual yearbook. She was able to attend the National Scholastic ceremony in New York City in summer 2023, when she and other gold medal winners were recognized for their outstanding artwork in Carnegie Hall. "They displayed my painting in a gallery, and I loved seeing other people’s work," Sara shared. "I met lots of other very talented teens, it was a great time."
