Third Grade Learns with Others

Third graders have been creating and learning in tandem with other students of different grades and even a different country! 

Dr. Baralt, Shorecrest’s Director of Educational Technology, led Shorecrest third graders through the Monster Project for her 12th year. The children learned about writing descriptive paragraphs using adjectives. Next, they drew monsters and wrote paragraphs to describe them. Soon, the paragraphs will be sent to a school in Canada to see if the students there can follow the descriptions and use them to re-create the monsters. 

Mrs. Hobbs’ third grade class decided to do an act of kindness for Mrs. Gallego's JK class to bring the inspiration of MLK Day into the classroom. They wanted to teach the younger Chargers how to play one of their favorite classroom math games. The older students adapted their game boards so the game would be at an appropriate math level for the students in JK. When third grade visited JK, they brought them a popcorn snack and taught them how to play the game. JK students got to keep the game boards signed by their third grade friends as gifts to take home. Peer teaching is a great benefit in our PK-12 school. Peer teachers reinforce their own learning by instructing others - all while building new friendships.

Third graders also worked with their seventh grade buddies to make Valentine's that were delivered to local senior citizens. 

Direct interaction between peers promotes active learning, critical thinking and student engagement.
