On February 19, 2016, the Alumni Association hosted its annual Career Day for sophomores, juniors and seniors of Shorecrest's Upper School. A total of 21 alumni, along with a few parents and friends of Shorecrest, sat on twelve different panels and spoke to students on topics ranging from careers in sports to fashion to careers in law to nonprofit management.
The students also attended the presentation of the 2015 Shorecrest Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award to alumnus Michael Ison '89, a physician working in transplants and infectious diseases at Northwestern University in Chicago. Following his acceptance of the award, Michael delivered a keynote address to the students.
Students and panelists were treated to a breakout luncheon after the sessions, and seated at tables with topics such as:
- Networking—Why is it important and how do I do it?
- Interview skills basics
- How to find jobs and internships
- Where to start when choosing a career
- Social media/your digital footprint and how it affects your future
- What do entry-level employees/interns NOT know?
- How important is my college major?
A special thank you goes out to all of our panelists for sharing the time and talents, as well as our Student Advisory Committee: Jack S ’16, Victoria V ’16, Jesse F ’17, Neha R ’17, Jackson G ’18 and Adrianna L ’18.
