Sub-Saharan Africa Class Debates

Upper School News

The students in the Sub-Saharan Africa class were given the dilemma of evaluating the efficiency of government aid to Africa based on geographic issues. The essential question posed to the students was, “Is Geography Destiny?” - the extent to which geography has hampered development in African countries.

Students formed two teams to collaborate, research and present their side of the the argument. The onus of learning was placed on the students as they were a part of deciding the format for sharing the information they gathered. The process of learning was student-inquiry based as they spent time in the library gathering evidence and preparing for their formal debate.

A panel of guests were invited to their classroom to serve as the “Congressional Hearing Committee”, evaluating the evidence and validity of their debates.
