Save Our Seabirds Service Week 2015

Upper School News

Save Our Seabirds is located on the water on Lido Key in Sarasota. Their mission is to locate and rehabilitate injured birds on the west coast of Florida. Though their name infers only seabirds, they really tend to any birds that are in need of care in the area - hawk varieties, owls, parrots, and even pigeons.

Aside from the trained staff that tends to the birds' physical needs, all other support staff are volunteers. Most volunteers are retirees, so having ten young men to do physically demanding work was a pleasant surprise for them. And work they did!

The boys spent their days sweeping, chopping and hauling small trees and brush, and the most fun job… moving dirt into the brown pelican pen while the pelicans were still in it! The pelicans kept everyone on their toes with nips and squawks but they could be friendly as well, not minding the occasional pet on the head.

Save Our Seabirds is a lovely place to visit and see these marvelous birds up close. Sadly, some of the pelicans as well as sand hill cranes and other birds, are destined to live out their days at SOS with injuries that prevent them from surviving in the wild. Find SOS across the parking lot from Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, and just down the road from St. Armand’s Circle shopping and Gulf beaches - making for an enjoyable day trip and helping out this valuable organization at the same time.
