State tennis: Shorecrest's Litsky breaks through for title

Since losing in last year's district final to a player he had beaten twice in the regular season, Shorecrest junior Peter Litsky has thought a lot about where he will be Wednesday morning:
Playing for the Class A overall singles championship.
The Charger cruised through the singles competition and capture the individual singles championship for No. 1 players whose teams did not make it to state, beating Miami's Richard Torres 6-2, 6-4 Tuesday at Red Bug Park.

Litsky was broken at 4-3 in the second set but finished off Torres by taking the last two games.
"I just told myself to stay focused and stay calm," said Litsky, who let a 4-2 advantage slip away.
Litsky was an eighth-grader in his last visit to state when he went with the Shorecrest team, making the No. 3 final as the Chargers finished third overall.
As a freshman, the Chargers did not advance (Litsky did win No. 2 singles at districts). And last year, Litsky lost in the district final at No. 1 to the eventual individual champion, Evan Holvoet of Canterbury.
"I beat him twice during the regular season so that was a little frustrating," Litsky said. "I've been getting ready for this ever since."
Whereas Holvoet was unable to go for the overall singles championship because of an injury, Litsky will take on Pensacola Catholic's Christopher Ephron for the title today.
Clearwater Central Catholic's Jacque Lazaro lost in the Class A girls individual singles final 6-4, 6-0.
