Peter L did not make it past the district tournament last season, though he was beaten by an eventual state champ in Canterbury’s Evan Holvoet. He was afraid the same thing might happen again this season. He had to get past Zach Bessette of Bradenton St. Stephen’s, a formidable opponent, in the district final.
“I was really worried about the district final,” said pete, a junior. “I’d lost to him the last two times I played him, so once I got through that and saw the draw for the state tournament I thought I could do it.”
Pete, who is the No. 3-ranked 16-under player in the state according to the USTA, did not lose a set in districts or at the state tournament. In fact, he didn’t drop a set during the entire high school season.
“It does feel awesome, but now I’m just looking forward,” Pete said of his first high school state title. “My goal was to get to the state tournament and try to win it. Now I want to get better and try to get there again.”
Pete has committed to Brown University, where he will also play tennis. He said he will take a break from tournament play until after the school year, then start back in the summer.
Why he won: Peter won the Class A overall singles championship at Red Bug Park in Casselberry. He defeated Pensacola Catholic’s Christopher Ephron 6-3, 6-1. He won four matches during the week, including the individual singles title on for players whose teams did not qualify for the state tournament.
