Chargers Win National French Award, Donate Winnings

Upper School News

Since 2013, the American Association of Teachers of French has sponsored a student media contest to promote connections to the Francophone world. This year students were asked to create short videos based on the theme “Tout est possible avec le français! (Everything is possible with French!)”

Over 100 schools participated this year. The student-submitted videos were judged on visual impact, relevance to the theme, originality and usage of French.

Upper School French Teacher, Sidy Ndiaye, said the videos his class created this year, which replicated news reports and were their midterm projects, were a highlight of his teaching career. His assignment required each group to cover at least six news topics in their video, such as health, entertainment or sports. They included serious reflection on current events, as well as funny campus scenes such as a Shorecrest Lower School carline traffic report.

Winners were announced recently in a video shared by the AATF 2020 National French Week Media Contest. A video created by and starring Shorecrest Upper School students Cían McCarthy ‘22, Théo Simon ‘22, Johnny Elwyn ‘22 and Ben Neuhoff ‘22 was awarded an Honorable Mention. Their faux news broadcast was filmed using an iPad® - in part with a green screen and also around campus - and they used AirDrop® to transfer the files to a MacBook® to edit via iMovie®. The students each received a certificate. They also received $75, which they donated to students in Senegal; furthering their service project with Excellence Elementary School.

Congratulations Chargers on your excellent performance in French at the national level and thank you for your heartfelt donation!
