First Grade Researches Best Pets

Lower School

In Ms. Simons' first grade class, the current mini unit of inquiry revolves around the snuggly world of pets. The unit is guided by an Enduring Understanding, a statement summarizing the important ideas central to the topic for our class, that a classroom pet can teach us about the needs of others while helping us develop our own character traits.

The class is enthusiastically engaged in the exploration of potential classroom pets. Each student carefully selected a pet and is diligently researching information to demonstrate how their chosen companion aligns with the central theme.

A field experience at Animal House Pet Center encouraged more learning. Channeling the adventurous spirit of Ms. Frizzle and the Magic School Bus, first graders rode buses and embarked on a journey of discovery. With clipboards in hand they delved further into their animal research. From inquisitive inquiries to hands-on encounters, they were immersed in the wonders of nature. Snakes, turtles, frogs, guinea pigs, chicks, and parrots—each creature captured hearts as they learned from the store's knowledgeable experts.

Students will transform their knowledge into captivating projects. Stay tuned for this student-led work that will showcase the wealth of knowledge and excitement gained from our unforgettable adventure and research.
