Shorecrest stays Hot with Keswick Invitational Win

In the Press

Ever since losing to Carrollwood Day in the opening volleyball match of the season, Shorecrest has been on a roll. The Varsity Volleyball Chargers have won seven straight matches, and they prevailed at the Keswick Invitational over the weekend by beating St. Petersburg 2-0 in the final. In a district with good teams like Indian Rocks Christian, Calvary Christian and St. Petersburg Catholic, Shorecrest has emerged as the team to beat.

"We have a lot of depth," first-year coach Ryan Swanson said. "I knew in tryouts that there was a good mix of players on this team. We have talented, young players as well as senior leadership.''

Leading the way is senior outside hitter Savannah R. Savannah, the MVP of the Keswick Invitational, leads the team with 77 kills and has 47 digs. Fellow senior Brittney R broke her foot and is out of the lineup. She has been replaced by eighth-grader Julia G.

Swanson said a pair of freshmen have also contributed. Outside hitter Jacqueline S has 53 kills and setter Taylor W has 206 assists. Another player off to a good start is junior hitter Nicole L, who has 67 kills.

With four straight district games prior to the Tampa Catholic tournament at the end of the month, the Chargers will have a good idea of where they stand.
But if the Keswick tournament is any indication, Shorecrest will be tough to deal with.
