Shorecrest School

Choice - Support - Balance

Head of School Letter

Trying to capture the educational and community experiences provided at Shorecrest or any organization in 3 words is not an easy task. We all have our pockets of passion and want to be sure they are included in all of the day-to-day and long range planning efforts and statements. This past week, our new Director of Marketing and Communications, Rachel Martin, presented to the Administrative Team and the Board of Trustees her synthesis of all the opportunities we provide to our students, their parents and our faculty and staff.

We think Rachel has hit the nail on the head.

Clearly, we try to provide our students with choice in how they go about learning and participating in our community. While there are certain expectations for our students, we strive to be flexible and provide choice so they can develop their personal strengths.

The relationships that develop between students and teachers, the programs that enhance learning opportunities for our students, and our faculty and staff’s open-door culture create a community where its members can seek and receive support. At times that support is offered before it’s even requested. The support parents offer to their children, their children’s friends, to their peers, to the faculty and to the school make Shorecrest a healthy place to be. Whether in the classroom, in athletics, arts or service, our community is focused on supporting each other and those outside our immediate campus community.

I write about balance more than any other topic. Most of our students, their parents/guardians and our teachers live remarkably busy and full lives. Even as we make efforts to adjust academic schedules and guidelines to encourage the social-emotional health of our students and teachers, there is no denying that we all learn to balance our activities in order to manage the stress that comes from efforts to achieve excellence. The Shorecrest curriculum is a blend of 21st century science and technology combined with traditional liberal arts focused on preparing students to be broadminded, ethical citizens. We know we are providing an education that is preparing students for careers and opportunities that do not already exist. Even those who know what they would like to do as a career will face dramatic changes in how that work is accomplished. By providing a balance of activities and electives we open up opportunities for university study, career pursuits and active citizenship.

More is happening to change schools and education than ever before. This is the most interesting environment for opportunity I have experienced. Shorecrest Preparatory School, with a natural focus on Choice, Support and Balance, is poised to take full advantage of the opportunities and provide them to our students, their families and our teachers.

Cheers!
Mike
