Communication skills, interpersonal relationship skills, commitment, creativity, adaptability, patience and love never seemed more important.
We now know that our earliest return to school will be May 1. It is likely we will continue our distance learning experiences through May 22, the scheduled last day of school. I have faith that we will become increasingly creative in the ways we connect and make the best of the “stay at home” order.
Stories of virtual and drive-by birthday celebrations have brought smiles and joy to many. “Computer-Pal” (modern versions of pen-pal) partnerships with distant relatives, hospitalized and quarantined people have lifted the spirits of many who are most isolated by efforts to keep community members safe.
Our School Heads are finding that one-on-one calls/Zooms, virtual social events, tracking students on PowerSchool, videos, and reading stories are some of the ways they can support colleagues and students alike.
People are writing more. People are reading more. People are playing games together. Families are having meals together. Many of the behaviors for which educators and child psychologists have been advocating are happening with greater frequency. Those are silver linings in the midst of this disruptive pandemic.
Administrators and teachers are thinking of creative and meaningful ways to ensure students and families can experience some of the time-honored celebrations normally scheduled for this time of year. We are open to ideas that ensure the safety of all community members.
We know we have work to do. Seven more weeks are scheduled for this school year. If we can safely return, we will. However, if we cannot, we will continue to provide lessons and experiences to serve the current educational needs of our students.
I have seen teachers send thoughtful and kind notes to students and families encouraging them to do what they can but not to make learning a negative experience for children or adults. We are mindful that there is more going on in the lives of our students and their families than just school.
Administrators and teachers alike, as always, are here to live our Mission and be the college preparatory school that educates a diverse community of students to be lifelong learners…
We are here for you.
Let us know how we can support your children and you. Eventually, these days of social distancing and distance learning will pass and become an important part of the story of this generation.
I believe we will be on the positive end of the story as we remain #ShorecrestTogether.
Cheers!
Mike
