Volunteer Breakfast 2015

SCA News

Mike and Robin Murphy always do a fabulous job making volunteers feel appreciated! The Volunteer Breakfast held at their home was a great way to celebrate the end of another school year. Gina White has graciously led our SPA Board and worked really hard to infiltrate the theme of "community" into our school family. She was honored by Shorecrest.

The Janet Root Volunteer of the Year Award was given out. This year, for the 17th time in 31 years since Janet Root herself first received this award in 1985, there were 2 recipients… a true testimony of the scope and strength of Shorecrest’s volunteers.

Our first recipient got involved her first year, serving as Den mother for Shorecrest’s Cub Scouts, library mom, and room parent multiple times. She quickly found her niche and utilized her corporate strengths and knowledge to support and promote Shorecrest’s growth through campaign after campaign. For the past nine years she has served on Shorecrest’s Board of Trustees, holding key positions including: Secretary, Vice-Chair and Chair – each for 2 years.

Concurrent to her board position, she had enough belief in a vision when it was still on paper, to take up an additional role which would span the course of 2 years. She co-chaired the aptly-named “Leading Today Building for Tomorrow” capital campaign, which completed the building of the Middle School Arts & Sciences Building and Upper School’s Landy Hall.

She continued lending her expertise as a member of the Board’s Finance committee and the Advancement committee, which she also went on to chair for 2 years. A true leader, she additionally lent her talents to the State of the Arts committee for 2 years before becoming Chair this school year. Finally, needing a bit of sunshine, she served as team parent for the Boys Varsity Golf Chargers for the past 3 seasons.

Overall, during her 12 years at Shorecrest she has served in 14 different roles most of which continued for multiple years and many that overlapped during the same years.  She has truly donated of herself to the Shorecrest community.

Our second volunteer has helped in the library and helped with costumes for several Shorecrest theatrical performances. She has helped with school pictures (her personal favorite) for 8 years, and has also chaired the Ident-A-Kid program.

She was a team parent for the girls’ basketball team. She has served as class Liaison for both the Junior class and Senior class (another mammoth job)

Someone who truly enjoys participating in a variety of ways, she has lent a helping hand to the Fall Festival, Big Event, Teacher Appreciation luncheon, Middle School supply sale, holiday greenery and Holiday Gift Drive.

She served as Treasurer of SPA for 3 years, a position that requires at least a 2-year commitment, can often be challenging, and is always time-consuming.

She assumed the role of Secretary to the Booster Club for 2 years, is currently serving as Vice-President, and will step into the role of President in 2015.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to extraordinary volunteers Pam Murphy and Dana Gipe!

Incoming SPA President Kristin Leary wants parents to know, "My goal as President for 2015–16 is to continue to provide opportunities for our community to come together and form new relationships and strengthen the current ones. We have a group of dynamic, hard-working volunteers to help me lead our SPA board through the next school year!"

Meet the 2015-2016 SPA Board:

President: Kristin Leary
Vice President: Shaheen Hemsey

Marketing and Communications Coordinator: Zeina Kropf

Shorecrest will bid farewell to an outstanding volunteer at the end of the school year, Director of Service Learning Su Stevens. After helping Hurricane Katrina victims acclimate in our community as a volunteer mom ten years ago, Su stepped into a role to assist the students at Shorecrest in finding ways they could lend a hand locally, nationally and internationally. Through collaboration, she has implemented our now very successful service learning program and Upper School Service Week. She has created partnerships between Shorecrest and many area organizations, and in her spare time helped with Relay For Life organization, many students' personal service projects, and Mayor's Youth Showcase Award nominations. Upper School students stay on track with their service hours needed to graduate with the push she gives them. Thank you, Su, for keeping our hearts on track.
