JK studies the South American Rainforest

Shorecrest Junior Kindergarteners have been reading various pieces of literature, including "The Umbrella" by Jan Brett, to introduce the layers of the South American rainforest. They have been doing their own research about the animals that inhabit each zone, and spent the past few weeks compiling their illustrations into books, informational posters and dioramas.

Students enjoyed representing their new knowledge in a variety of ways, including transforming their classroom loft into a detailed rainforest including vines, leaves and tall tree murals. They all had ideas and contributed to the construction. After completing the collaborative mural, they set off to create their own smaller scale representation including bromeliad flowers, the many exotic birds that call the emergent layer home, and even added in real coffee beans after learning about this important export.

 

Next the children will be kicking off their exploration of Africa by having a guest expert who will bring in two live tortoises; one native to South America and one native to Africa. The children will compare each reptile and have the opportunity to learn more about these beautiful animals.
