Shorecrest School

SAGA Family Fun Day, Sept 25

Experiential School News

All members of the Shorecrest community are invited to join Latinos en Shorecrest on September 25, 10am - 2pm for an outdoor family fun day on campus to recognize and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The September 25th event is the first of a number of SAGA events this school year, each one hosted by a different affinity group on campus. All members of the Shorecrest community are welcome at all SAGA events.

At Shorecrest, an affinity group is a group of community members with a shared, underrepresented presence with the purposes of empathy, support and education. The Shorecrest Affinity Group Alliance (SAGA) is a collection of the family affinity groups that exist in the Shorecrest Community. The groups that are currently active are: ShorecrestPride (LGBTQ+ families), Latinos en Shorecrest, the Families of African American Students, and the International Connections group (for families with international heritage).

This year, Emily Arthur, mother of Jackson ‘33, has volunteered to chair SAGA and work with Roderick Fludd, the Director of Diversity and Inclusion, to connect affinity group members to one another and to the full Shorecrest community.

“This first SAGA event of the school will be an excellent opportunity to connect and meet someone new, while showing your support of the members of Shorecrest’s Hispanic/Latinx community,” says Mr. Fludd.

About Hispanic Heritage Month:
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

“The Shorecrest community and its support of each other was one of the biggest reasons that I decided to work here,” shared Roderick Fludd, Director of Diversity and Inclusion. “I am happy to see that we remain a welcoming community that supports and encourages all of its members to find the best in each other.”

Shorecrest will host SAGA events throughout the school year, each one sponsored by a different family affinity group.
