The Specials All-The-Time Hair Salon

Experiential School News

A long term investigation taking place in Mrs. Summers’ Junior Kindergarten classroom is a student hair salon. With student curiosity leading the conversation, the class explored the concept of creating and managing a business, with particular interest in hair styling. They decided to name their in-class hair salon “The Specials All-The-Time Hair Salon.”

A temporary structure in the classroom representing a salon-style booth with a chair, mirror, and fake lights was decked out with appropriate tools such as hair rollers, clips, barrettes, etc. Manicures were occasionally included as well! Through this investigation they have been learning about hair fibers, ways people around the world express themselves through their hair styles, hair dressing for costumes and many other things. Braiding has been a fine motor activity that connects to the topic.
Thank you to Shorecrest parent Ryan Ramaciere, who visited as a guest expert and taught the children about being a hairdresser.

On Crazy Hair Day during Homecoming Week, the students provided their services to the Experiential School community. They have enjoyed the presence of teachers and parents who were loyal customers!
