Navigating Accommodations in College

Upper School News


On Monday, Tracie Belt, Director of The Learning Center at Shorecrest, and Ron Heller, Upper School history teacher, led a group of parents and students to the USFSP campus to learn about the process that incoming freshmen must follow in order to obtain academic accommodations.

Dr. Lyman Dukes represented the school's Disability Student Service office, and presented comprehensive resources and tips for navigating the transition from high school to college for students with academic accommodations. Chargers were able to learn more about student expectations vs. what colleges are required to do to help. They received tips on how to be more successful students and find resources and support structures while in college. Decreased parent involvement was also explained.

There was an invaluable Q&A period with both Dr. Dukes and his colleague, Barry McDowell, the Assistant Director of Student Disability Services. The University also showed off its STEM program and Compass program, which eases the transition to college for incoming freshmen, starting with fun orientation events at the beginning of each semester.

Mrs. Belt and Mr. Heller will continue to explain this very important process for parents and students. Look for announcements of future meetings and campus visits in Ebytes.
