When You Love What You Do

The famous artist Richard Serra is known for saying “Work comes out of work.” He is talking about the pieces of art that result from dedication and effort put forth over a period of time. As I think about this quote from Serra, I believe it applies to the many situations where practice and dedication are applied and the end results can be seen as the culmination of the work put in. This week, Shorecrest is the fortunate recipient of the efforts put forth by so many members of the community.  

It is the end of the fall athletic season where months of practice and teamwork result in post-season competition opportunities. The volleyball team has completed its season after advancing to districts, while the football, swimming and diving, cross-country and golf teams have all advanced to regional competitions. These athletes are in their peak forms, after months of conditioning. They are experienced competitors after a full regular season of matches, games, and meets. They have savored the wins and learned from their losses. Our students’ dedication to their sport and the commitment of their coaches over the past fall season have combined to create a culminating experience. We wish all our Chargers athletes continued good luck as they compete in the coming days.   

Yesterday was the opening night performance of the Middle School musical “Annie Jr.!” A joyful musical to start with (because the sun WILL come out tomorrow), the enthusiasm and energy that emanated from the stage of the Janet Root Theatre was awe-inspiring. What a performance, which clearly resulted from weeks of afternoon rehearsals, daily practice of singing and dancing, and hours devoted to learning lines of dialogue. Our Middle School performers demonstrated that a work of art truly does come from dedicated effort, and with the guidance, teaching and support of their teachers.

Today’s Fall Festival was the result of meticulous planning and many hours of dedicated effort. This celebration simply could not have happened without the work put in by so many parent and family volunteers. The decorations alone took my breath away. I know that every single paper leaf was cut out by hand, for example, with student names written on them. The area outside Charger Commons was frankly transformed into an explosion of autumn and fun! Seeing the colorful costumes of the students and the decorated cars prompted me to think about how much time families devote to getting ready to celebrate Fall Festival. The spirit of community is enhanced by so many people coming together to create these special memories for our children. It is a meaningful tradition and a wonderful celebration. 

Sometimes, work doesn’t feel like work. Sometimes, putting in lots of time and energy for a mutual goal seems different; it feels satisfying and worth all the effort when you see the end result. At Shorecrest, we appreciate the hard work of our students, faculty & staff and family members. We say, thank you and well done!
